How to bulk edit an element for only a selected sub set of records labelled with that element

I have a set of some 350 observation records collected across 8 transects. The observers forgot to update their Transect No. (should have been 1 to 8) as they progressed. S all records are assigned to transect 1. It is easy to select all the records that should have been in e.g. transect 2 ec… But the bulk edit option doesn’t seem to recognise the selected subset of observations. Instead it changes all the elements labelled Transect 1 to transect 2, thoughout the file, selected and unselected records. Which is no better than having all the records labelled transect 1!! I can edit each record individually to assign them to their correct transect, but would prefer to avoid this if possible. Please can someone advise if there is a solution.

Many thanks

Hi Tim,

There is a check box in the bottom left corner of the Bulk Edit dialog called “Selection only”. That should restrict the effects of the edit.

If possible, use different Queries (one per transect) and (as Justin mentioned) the “Selection only” Check box, it should work to change Number 1 to the fitting number 2 … 8.
