Entries disappear after edit

Hi everyone,

Maybe this has been discussed before and if so, apologies for reopening the topic! I could not find any answer to my problem on here however, which is why I’m asking

My problem is this: when observers edit an observation and go a couple of pages back into the observation, and then forward to save again, the information on the last page (a text element) is not retained. The same happens with one of the multiselect elements, where the previously entered information disappears when you “skip over it” during edit.

Observers always save on the last page, so preemptive saving should not be the issue. You can furthermore already see during the edit that the information has disappeared. I tried using retain state, but I do not want to retain the entries over multiple observations, so that does not work.

Did anyone have a similar problem, or an idea on how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance,

Josefien

Hi Josefien,

This sounds like a possible bug. Could you send me a link to your project so I can check it out?

Thanks

Hi Justin,

Thank you very much for getting back to me! This should be the link: Get CyberTracker

The problem mainly seems to occur with the Daily_Program form, although this is also where most back-and-forth seems to be happening. It is not consistent however, and entries seem to disappear “randomly”.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Josefien,

Here is what I am seeing:

  1. Go to the last page (Comments) and enter some text
  2. Edit the sighting and go back a page, make a change
  3. Confirm (Check mark on bottom bar) without going forward to the Comments page
  4. Observe that the Comment is missing

Is this what you are seeing?

Thanks,
-Justin

Hi Justin,

I initially also thought this was the problem (saving before going to the last page), but after consulting with users and them showing it to me the entry in the comments disappears already during edit. So:

  1. go to last page and enter some text
  2. Edit the sighting, go back, make a change
  3. Still in edit mode, go back to the last page (comments)
  4. Observe comment missing (in edit mode)

While I’ve seen it happen on some tablets, it does not happen consistently and I haven’t figured out what the trigger might be. All tablets have the same version of the CT app (1.0.571) and use the same version of the application. I was initially thinking it might be an user error but after some people showed me what happens on their tablets, I’m more leaning towards a potential bug or wrong setting somewhere (since I can’t see them doing something wrong during the edit).

Cheers,

Josefien

I just went through the form again and found the following:

  1. I fill in Start time, Begin Babooon Sighting, Other group around and Sleeping tree
  2. I fill in Descent from sleeping tree and Leaving sleeping tree area
  3. I fill in Work party and End baboon sighting
  4. I fill in Focals completed
  5. I fill in a random Comment
  6. I go into Edit mode and on the first page, enter the Agent
  7. Still in Edit mode, if I go forwards to the comments again, information about Focals completed is gone (while the Comments are retained in this scenario)

Hi Josefien,

I do not see this on my side.

Could you confirm if you have more than one Comment screen in your database?

Thanks

Hi Justin,

Yes, there are more than one comment screens in our database, but the Daily Program only consistently leads to one. Only the Social Behaviour form can lead to a different comment page.

I’m starting to think it might have something to do with whether people tick/untick sleeping tree on page one, or reply to Lost Group or not. While Lost Group == No leads to the same page as not replying to this question, and ticking sleeping tree gives you an extra screen but then continues on the same page as not ticking sleeping tree, maybe because the “path” slightly changed it doesn’t retain information?

Thanks again for looking into this!

Hi Josefien,

Yes, it seems to be connected to the Lost group selection.

Could you please send me (justin@steventon.com) a CTX of your database?

Thanks
